What is Graphic Design?

Identify 5 pieces of graphic design used in different contexts
Packaging

Innocent always have brightly coloured child friendly packaging, which appeals to
everyone, therefore they are a prime example of good graphic design.

Clothes design

Brand Nu aka Radim Malinic, is an award winning art director, illustrator and graphic designer from London, England. I liked his work as its bright and stands out.

Type
Works simply as advertising by Boris Pelcher

Menu Design- Wagamamas

I wanted to look at menu design briefly as i think it plays a very important role in todays society, people eat out almost every week, and so the menu must say a lot about the food and whole dining experience, and make its audience want to eat there and not in another restaurant.

Product design

I found this particular piece of design quite amusing, it is witty yet it still works, the layout of the designs and how the idea has been put in reality shows that it is successful.

5 examples of graphic design which perform
different functions

Road signs are created in order to inform drivers and pedestrians of important messages in order to keep them save when using roads, they are all very simple and often don't include words so that they appeal to everyone.

Gig promotion- I really liked both of these designs they are quirky and colourful, they show exactly what they are selling and both work in the sense that they are eye catching.

Film Teaser poster- Reservoir Dogs
This poster for the film Reservoir dogs combines the old with the new, it uses a simple palette of colours and the type is bright and legible.

NHS Campaigns

the stop smoking campaigns are always shocking and sometimes a little disturbing. the ones i have chosen below shock there audience into relising what smoking does to the human body. therefore this Campaign does exactly what it attempts.

5 pieces of Graphic design which deliver different types of meaning

I remember this campaign from when I was younger, It was used as signs and leaflets as well as posters and even talks on teaching children road safety. It is bold and uses a simple colour palette which would be attractive to young children.

The government campaign "Fire Kills" works really well as a logo as well as a poster, it grabs the audience by making the message personal "you" refers the the person reading it. the colours used are effective as they resemble what is trying to prevent.

Drink aware Is another campaign which seeks to decrease the amount of casualties from drinking too much alcohol. The type really stands out to me as being particularly appealing to young adults, the colours also appeal to both female and male. It asks a simple question which deters the audience from getting so drunk that it ruins their night, it is successful in preventing heavy drinking.

Proper-gander from the First world war shows a women who is part of the red cross. the peter tries to make women join the red cross and help their country, it works by asking the audience to join her in the fight.

The Apple logo is universally known it is simple and easily understood, it needs no type to be recognised and can be changed from white to any other colour without it loosing it image.

Identify 5 pieces of graphic design which use different media

Yulia Brodskaya is an artist who uses paper to created images, she has worked for a wide variety of clients such as Hermes, Starbucks and Nokia, her work is original yet very popular.

As my second piece of graphics i have chosen to look at Banksy, he work interests me as it nearly always has a political meaning behind it, such as the image below of the two police men kissing or the Soldier being checked by a young girl. they are ironic and sometimes even sarcastic. Many call him a graffiti artist and so I have included his work as it if formed by spray paint.

Screen print- This image was produced via screen Printing, it was made my a designer called mark weaver as an experiment for branding.

Photography- Photography is often used in graphic design, i particularly liked these images as they combine photography with illustration to produce an image.

Aussie shampoo has really taken of in the UK within the past two years, there products are well advertised, look clean and are pleasing on the eye. thy are very appealing to women but less to men.

5 pieces of graphic design which use different scales.

The first example of Graphics used on different scales is on Make u, My favourite is By Benefit, the colours and illustrations done on each individual item makes benefit as a company really stand out to me, when it comes to purchasing.

The second is a piece which advertises cigars, i like it as it matches the shop next door as del as the way the photo itself has been taken.

Everyone knows an Ikea Label when they see one, i thought it was a good example of how graphic design is used to inform people of which products to buy, It is simple but legible and understandable.

This is another example of large scale graphics, It has been taken from a car park in Melbourne and the idea is to communicate to the audience where the exit and entry are. they are really quirky and fun, however some people may find them difficult to read or may not even notice them, as they look more like a piece of contemporary are than directions.

This is a piece of Graphics taken from the underground in London, it is large in scale and uses mainly typography to communicate a message.
