Si Scott Studio Visit

Si Scott Visit
Si Scott came for a studio visit and showed his work to us,  His illustrations are universally know and he has worked world wide, i think he is very inspiring as a designer and from his talk i have learned that i shouldn't do work if i don't engage or morally back it up. As a designer he is very opinionated in what he likes within design and from this he work ha developed.

Berlin research

Here are some photos form when i visited Berlin, I was amazed by the city, and found it very culturally interesting and intriguing, the graffiti and street art as well s the general ethos of the place really made me want to see ore and explore the place. Little pieces of street art such as this one adds a sense of personality to the city. In the cute i would really like to work and live in berlin, as a graphic design or any kind of deigner i think a city like berlin would really help with creativity.

Another thing which i found fascinating was the Berlin wall, i thought the culture and the history behind this piece of art or graffiti was really interesting and shows another side the Berlin. Overall i think visiting berlin has really helped further my contextual knowledge of design and the design world around me.

End of module self-evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
During this module i feel that i have learnt a lot about the industry od graphic design, we have learnt about the what setting up a studio would be like and difficult it would be, this has helped me relies that when i graduate i would like to work for a studio rather than just for myself, as there is so much to do when being self employed. Lifes a pitch has helped me to think about the kind of people i would like to work with and which area of graphic design i would like to go into, and as i result of this i think my skills have improved.

What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I think from doing tasks and sessions with john I have released that there are so many different areas of graph design which I could go into, this has broadened my mind and helped me think about what I would ideally like to be doing in 5 years time. For example when I did my bringing I thought i would be easy, but it was probable the hardest project I have done yet, as I really wanted to communicated what I did within my own practice, but I also wanted to communicate what I liked too. I did really enjoy doing this brief but as john said to everyone I think I will have to redo my branding.
What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise these?
During this year i have become a lot more confident in my own skill, In first year i really stubbled when doing projects as I felt they were to quick and i couldn't find my own style, however his year through having more time and exploring more processes and ways of working i think i have become more individual in the way I produced design. I also think my presentation skills have greatly improved, even if they are still are not great I feel much more confident and relaxed when presenting tho the class.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
Layout is a huge weakness for me, I find it really difficult to be successful at this, hopefully next year I can practice more and develop my skills. Another weakness which I always struggle with is COP, anything which is contextual I find hard, the lecture I always get fidgety in and can't concentrate, so this makes it very difficult when coming to write my essays, and tasks.

Numiko Talk

Numiko is a digital communications agency, who came in to visit our course group to bust some of the myths about web design and what they do. although i didn't really enjoy the Web design module I really enjoyed listening to their talk on Web, they told us about how you don't have to be able to code, which is something which I hated doing anyway but instead it was more important to be able to design a fully functioning navigable website which was easy to understand and easy to get around.

We solve digital problems for our clients through user research, design and technology across digital platforms. We like working with people who make a difference and we have the pleasure of working with some brilliant clients to help them engage their audiences, from BBC and Channel 4, to the National Lottery Good Causes, NESTA and the NSPCC.

Poster Brief

Below is the poster which i produced for the studio brief, the idea was to promote a gallery space, We didn't know what he gallery space was going to be for so we literally just had to promote the idea. It was a competition brief and the top 5 voted by the class won and would get to go on the walls were the space would eventually be.

Luckily the class voted me into the top 5 and so my work is now on the wall in the space leading up to the time when it is used for other things.

Branding layout

Here is the branding layout for my own branding, I wanted the design to be able to be applied across a range of products, below I have mocked up, envelopes, cd's, mugs and books. This is what my branding would look like all together. I have also included my Creative CV.

Creative CV

Here is my creative cv, I wanted it to look visually pleasing, and so I continued on with the same colour scheme and illustrative style which i used throughout the rest of my branding, I have used this bright yellow colour a lot more as i think it makes the layout look a lot more pleasing and exciting.

505 Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have looked a lot more into different research methods, The research book really helped my develop my idea and has pushed me to consider more than just one concept when doing a brief. I think my illustration skills have further developed also as i have based my whole brief two on illustration, as well as my poser brief,  I have tried to apply these skills to the best of my ability I did still really enjoy designing  my website, I have mocked them up in Illustrator but In the future I would like to learn more about web so that I can apply it to my work. I have enjoyed doing all the different processes which I have used in my project, I Used paper craft within my project and really enjoyed doing it, it is defiantly something which i would like to peruse in the future.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Overall I have enjoyed doing all three briefs, I really feel like experimenting with different print processes and this has helped me discover new ways of working and therefore made me develop different skills which I can apply to my work in the future. Different techniques which I have tried are screen printing on to both fabric and paper and different types of digital printing as well as Paper craft and Lazor cutting. I have produced more design sheets than normal, organising my layout on design sheets , and this has defiantly helped me develop my ideas. my design sheets are better quality than previously, Design sheets have helped me move from my rough ideas on to my final products

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I really enjoyed Making the final products for  brief  2  and so i think it has shown in the work, I overall pleased with my final products from this brief, i think making the Site map illustrations  was something I enjoyed and so i will hopefully do illustration again. I really wanted to try new methods of working so that I can expand my skills, I think I have achieved this in this project and will defiantly apply the skills I have learnt to my work in the future

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

One weakness which is very obvious within all  of my projects is not enough research, if I were to go back and redo them I would start by researching everything in much more detail and further this through my project . Another thing which i would address in the future would be to do more design sheets.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

  • I would start my research much earlier into a wider range of things, as well as things which rant directly linked to the project but which is surrounding research to get more of a feel for the area of choice.
  • Within the Brief 2 I would Do some more products instead of just sticking to several designs for the product, I think more of a range would have been more refreshing., I would also create something which is 3D like a mobile which I would also look more into the area which I am looking at.
  • I would try to manage my time better and give myself time periods to do things, as well a writing myself lists and trying to be more organised.
  • I would do more design sheets, I have found that they have really helped me in the last project and I wish I had done more within the web project.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor
