PPP Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
During this module I feel that I have learnt a lot about the industry and about graphic design itself. I have payed a lot of attention to trying to contact studios in this module, as I would like to gain a pavement or internship from it.  I have looked into  what setting up a studio would be like and released how difficult it would be, this has helped me relies that when I graduate I would like to work for a studio rather than just for myself, I  would like to gain experience first.  helped me to think about the kind of people I would like to work with and which area of graphic design I would like to go into, and as I result of this I think my skills have improved.

What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

This year I have been a lot more interested in producing physical work instead of just mock ups, I have released that there are many different areas of  design which I could go into, this has broadened my mind and helped me think about what I would ideally like to be doing in 5 years time. When I did my branding last year I found it difficult, however this year I still did find it hard, but I think I knew that i needed to keep it open in terms of what I do. When I did it last year  I thought I would be easy, but it was probably the hardest project I have done yet, as I really wanted to communicated what I did within my own practice, but I also wanted to communicate what I liked too.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise these?
During this year I have become a lot more confident in my own skill, In previous years really struggled  when doing projects as I felt they were to quick and I couldn't find my own style, however his year through having more time and exploring more processes and ways of working i think I have become more individual in the way I produced design. I also think my presentation skills have greatly improved, even if they are still are not great I feel much more confident and relaxed when presenting to the class. I think when talking about my work I can much more clearly get my idea across whereas in previous years i would feel embarrassed and shy.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
I think mocking up is a huge weakness in my work, I have however improved my photoshop skills this year, just by using it more and more, but they need need a lot of practice. I struggle with this skill but hopefully I can improve as i use it more and more and develop my skills.

Creative CV

Here is my creative cv, I wanted it to look visually pleasing, and so I continued on with the same colour scheme and illustrative style which i used throughout the rest of my branding, I have used this bright yellow colour a lot more as i think it makes the layout look a lot more pleasing and exciting.

Promo Pack Concept

In order to help get in contact with design studios this year I have screen printed a collection of 55 promotion packs, which I think represent me as a designer. The packs include, a business card, creative CV, cover letter and A6 Postcard. As well as Links to my online portfolio and contact details. These packs will be sent to studios all over the world, including San Francisco, Cape Town, Melbourne, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Studio Radio Research

Radio is another studio in Cape Town, I wanted to send a promotion pack to them a long time ago , as they produce work which I really like, and their studio is full of creatives from all different ends of the scale.

Shop Around Reasearch

After visiting Amsterdam in march i decided that I would like to apply for internships and/or placements in the city. I really liked it as a place and could see myself really living there when I'm older. I liked this studio as it does a wide variation of different things, from Illustration to branding.

Established in 1998 as a rep agency - mainly representing illustrators and graphic designers - Shop Around developed over the years into a creative production agency that specializes in contemporary illustration, graphic design, animation, motion graphics and interactive design.

Shop Around is based in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. From here we co-ordinate all our projects and hold strong contacts with our network of about 80 freelancers. We are continuously on the lookout for up-and-coming talent to foster. And strive to bring new artists to market. Our aim is to give a broad overview of 'what is happening' to advertising agencies, publishers, TV companies, record companies and direct accounts (companies not working with advertising agencies). We pride ourselves in being able to offer unparalleled expertise and experience managing complex briefs and tight deadlines for our clients.

MUTI design Research

MUTI is a creative studio based in the city of Cape Town, South Africa.  They work on a broad range of
projects from digital painting to vector icons and custom typography. I really liked this studio as it creates really interesting fun work, their work ethic is also something which I would liked to be a part of.

Sawdust Studios Research

I was very interested in the work of Sawdust, a design studio in London, I liked their work patricianly as they do a lot of Branding and Identity. I thought immediately when i saw their work that the use of colour was particularly nice.

MARK Studio Research

One of the studios which I would really like to be in contact with is MARK Studios in Cape Town South Africa. Bewlow is their website, they do Branding & Identity, Packaging, Illustration as well as other forms of design. I will defiantly be sending one of my promotion packs to this studios.

I particularly liked this packaging by MARK Studios, it is for various flavours of Jam, I like how they have used the white on the bare jar, and the logo as the central focus, it makes the jam look  neat and refreshing.

Final images of my Promo Pack

These are the final printed promo packs, I Am overall pleased with the  way they turned out, As I want to eventually gain a placement abroad I have planned to post these promo packs off to different countries around the world. Once I had posted them, the feedback i received was all very positive and the studios which got back to me were all very  grate full to receive a physical pack.

Sending off my Promo Packs

These are all my 55 promo packs after I had written all the addresses on them, all in piles according to where they were being sent to, there are two predominately larger piles which are to London and Cape town In South Africa. I sewed them all up in an orange thread to match the salmon pink colour which I chose to screen print in.

Proffesional contact

After sending out my promo packs I received a great deal of feedback even from studios which had no interest in taking me on as an intern. This is from Matthew Rowett at the design Surgery. He gave me some very useful advice about entering the world of design and about my own work.

Here are a few more from the many which I received,

Velcrobelly Placement

In the time before I go to Cape Town I have also planned a Placement in Newcastle at the biscuit factory design studios called Velcrobelly. I hope to be doing this placement in september and this should help me gain more experience in the design field.

Cape Town Placement

This is the conversation which I had with Craig Keown and  Frederik Peens at MARK studio in Cape Town South Africa. I have now arranged a placement with them in January for 2 months. The exact date, which I will be going depends on flight days, but I am very much looking forward to going.

This is the view out the studio window in Cape Town, we have been keeping conversation open and fun, with a lot of focus on the warm wether over there.

My Behance

I have also create a Behance this year in order to connect with other designers and look at other students work, this is what i have written about myself on my page.

I am an Image driven designer, Interested in a broad range of design including Illustration, print and pattern design for textiles. Within the work I produce I aim to communicate an idea through a playful and optimistic perspective, in whichever medium is appropriate.

I am currently studying Graphic Design BA(Hons) at Leeds college of Art, After graduating in June this year I hope to continue my Design practice by gaining skills and experience at a design studio. Read Less

My Website

After making all my promo packs I decided that i needed a website in order for studios to be able to look at my work, As I have not quite perfected the skill of coding yet I thought it would be a good idea to just make a Cargo site. In the end this turned out very well for me, as it is simple in layout and the design of which you could choose really brought my life to work. The response I have had from studios from all over the world has been great.
